Duke in Depth Past Events

Motown: The Sound of Change

Motown: The Sound of ChangeFrom February 20-22, 2015, alumni and their families and friends joined the Duke Alumni Association for an in-depth look at the music of Motown and its influence on the Civil Rights Movement. In a series of events that included lectures, panel discussions and presentations, participants explored the contributions of Motown and the music that was described as the “Sound of Young America.” As part of the weekend’s program, participants attended a performance of Motown the Musical, directed by Charles Randolph Wright '78, at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Alumni were joined by students from the theater studies and music departments, as well as many merit scholar students for a post-show discussion with members of the cast of Motown the Musical.

As part of the programming, a panel of faculty, alumni and students discussed civil rights in the twenty-first century.
