Shedd Aquarium has partnered with the Chicago Park District to help keep our beaches clean and healthy! Shedd's Great Lakes Action Days (GLAD) are about making a direct and positive difference for local wildlife. With more than 180 invasive plant and animal species in the Great Lakes, taking action to prevent the further spread of harmful ecological invaders is a good start toward restoring the Great Lakes.
A Shedd Aquarium staff member will start the GLAD by giving a short overview of the event. Participants will be asked to form teams of four to five volunteers, and each team will receive bags, gloves, and a litter monitoring form for the cleanup. The teams will clean the beach and categorize and tally the litter for about one hour. Before we dispose of the litter, a Shedd Aquarium representative will help teams weigh the items. Finally, teams will finish the beach clean-up portion of the day by submitting their litter monitoring form, which is used by our partner, Alliance for the Great Lakes, to better understand the debris that finds its way into the Great Lakes and inform policy and management.
