Please join your fellow Duke alums for a morning with the East Durham Children's Initiative. The details can be found below.

STEAM Saturdays are interactive, out-of-school workshops for 3rd-5th graders focused on topics related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. Workshops are offered on Saturday mornings with the support of local partner organizations, facilitators, and volunteers.

Recent STEAM programming has included units on creative expression and slam poetry, as well as earth and animal science. STEAM Saturdays expose students to STEM fields, encouraging them to imagine careers in a variety of STEM professions. Volunteer opportunities are available to engage with youth in a STEAM competition.

  • Refilling/Installing Little Libraries
Little libraries are community-based mini libraries that fit between 20-30 books. Families are able to select and exchange books at will, simply walking down the street. We hope to install one to two little libraries around the EDCI office.

  • Community Clean-Up
Community clean-up is an amazing way to get outside, while beautifying neighborhoods in Durham.

  • Cherry Grove Playground Beautification
EDCI built the Cherry Grove playground, and it often needs TLC. From painting to weed pulling to mulching, we love to make sure children can access and safely use the playground year-round.
