Join local Duke alumni in this virtual volunteering opportunity with 826 Boston. Work one-on-one with a high school junior or senior to help brainstorm, outline, draft, or edit those all-important 650 words: the college application essay.
Volunteer shift includes a tutor training and a tutor guide will be provided in advance as well.
This event is entirely virtual and all tutoring will take place on Zoom.
The college essay is arguably one of the most important pieces of writing our students will ever produce in their lives, but many students are trying to chart a course to college on their own. The College Essay Boot Camp can be the critical support students need.
Some stats about past College Essay Boot Camp participants:
- 60% of students who attended had parents who were born outside of the United States
- 45% of students reported that they would be the first in their families to attend college
- 48% of students had not started their essays prior to College Essay Boot Camp
- 70% of students left the College Essay Boot Camp with a 1st, 2nd, or final draft in hand.
826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students in grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life.
