Event Description

Data brokers have long offered data services that fuel the economy, including those such as connecting prospective customers with businesses, and playing integral roles in fraud prevention and authentication.  However, there have also been negative impacts from data brokerage on individuals, including privacy, civil liberties and physical safety. Some data brokers voice commitments to treating the data they collect and use responsibly. There are other companies though that do not take the risks to individuals into consideration when designing their services and others that intentionally target the most vulnerable in society.

Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy has taken the lead in analyzing the data brokerage ecosystem and proposing policy solutions including those in the California Delete Act. Come hear Professor David Hoffman describe his Technology Policy Lab’s data brokerage research and the role that capital investment and innovation can play in reducing the risks to individuals and society.
