  • Four Duke faculty members, as well as Duke President Richard H. Brodhead,were among the 202 men and women recently elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The new members from Duke are Paul L. Modrich, James B. Duke Professor of biochemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator; Joseph R. Nevins, James B. Duke Professor of molecular genetics and HHMI investigator; Stuart L. Pimm, Doris Duke Chair of conservation ecology; and Anne Firor Scott, W.K. Boyd Professor of history emerita.
  • John V. Brown, visiting director of the Duke Jazz Ensemble in 2003-04, has been appointed director of the jazz program and assistant professor of the practice of music. An accomplished jazz and classical musician-- he plays the double bass--he has performed with many of the greats, including Wynton and Ellis Marsalis, Rosemary Clooney, Nicholas Payton, and Mark Whitfield. He received a Grammy nomination for his performance and co-writing on Nnenna Freelon's1995 release, Shaking Free.
  • Under a new agreement between the Terry Sanford Institute of Public Policy and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Duke will offer reduced tuition each year for two or three Army officers to earn master's degrees in public policy. After completing Duke's two-year master's program with courses in political analysis, leadership and management, ethics, economics, international relations, and political science, officers will return to West Point.
