- Ian Baucom, professor and chair of the English department, has been named director of the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute. Baucom will succeed Srinivas Aravamudan, the new dean of the humanities in Arts & Sciences.
- Katherine Franz, assistant professor of chemistry, was named a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar. The award, for young faculty members in chemical sciences, includes a $75,000 unrestricted grant to support her research.
- Sally Kornbluth, James B. Duke Professor of pharmacology and cancer biology, has been named the new vice dean of research at Duke medical school. She had been vice dean of basic sciences for the past three years.
- Mike Krzyzewski, men's basketball head coach, will reprise his role as coach of Team U.S.A. His commitment begins with preparations for the 2010 FIBA World Championships and ends with the 2012 Olympics in London.
- Michael Merson, director of the Duke Global Health Institute, has been granted $3.5 million by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to help lead a major health project in China aimed at lowering blood pressure in rural areas. Eric Velazquez HS '95, HS '01, associate professor of medicine, will lead a project in Kenya under a similar grant.
- Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, will spend the fall semester in Croatia on a Fulbright research scholarship to study student services at universities there. In his absence, his responsibilities will be assumed by three student-affairs administrators.
- Kevin Sowers M.S.N. '89, who began his career at Duke Hospital twenty-four years ago as an oncology nurse, has been named the hospital's chief executive officer. He had been interim CEO and COO and had held a variety of administrative positions within the hospital system.
