Ten students were slated to move into Duke's Home Depot Smart Home in January. The 6,000-square-foot house, a showcase of green design and a living laboratory, took four years to plan, design, and construct. Among the many features designed by students are a green roof made up of living plants, two solar-power systems, rainwater collection systems, voice-recognition programs that allow students to communicate with the various systems, and wet and dry labs for future student projects.
