It's after nine o'clock on Election Night 2002, and Robin Hayes '67 is holed up in a small conference room on the seventh floor of the Lowe's Motor Speedway clubhouse in Concord, North Carolina. A few close aides are with him. His campaign manager is putting up county-by-county election returns on a white board as they come in over a radio and cell phone.

As the events of September 11 were commemorated this fall, sculptor Patrick Morelli A.M. '68 was working on a commission for the State of New Jersey--a memorial to the more than 700 state residents killed in the terrorist attacks.

At 8:45 a.m. on September 11, 2001, Owen May was sitting in his car, its turn signal blinking, first in line to turn left into a parking garage beneath the World Trade Center. Gil Scharf had just finished a business lunch in London. Karen Preziosi was on a city bus headed downtown on the Avenue of the Americas. Then the minute hand moved forward, and life changed.

It's 2012, and members of the Class of 2002 are back on campus for their tenth reunion. As they meander through the stone gates of Chapel Drive, down past the gardens and up past the Allen Building, they take in views of looming stone and graceful plantings, at once familiar and evocative.

 

April is the cruelest month in the financial-aid calendar. High-school seniors are receiving acceptance letters and their parents are trying to figure out where, or whether, or how, their children can go. Forms are due. Costs are catalogued and figures are totaled, and totaled again. And the phones in the financial-aid office start ringing, not to stop for nearly a month.

 Historian Martin Miller teaches in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program, with class every Wednesday night. The fall semester had barely begun--just one class meeting had been held--when his course became at once completely altered and entirely essential.

Duke University can be easily found on various maps. It floats as a dot in the north-central part of a state map. It becomes clearer on a regional map, as the dot resolves itself into a larger square, sometimes with an accompanying square for Duke Medical Center. On a small city map, the squares double, one for East Campus, one for West.

James Joseph has a word to describe those who take their concerns about private morality and wield them like a weapon against individuals. He calls them “virtuecrats.” And while the former U.S.
