Duke alumni are cordially invited to join us for the American University Clubs of France's Annual Embassy Reception and Summer Cocktail on Monday, July 10, 2023, at the historic Hôtel Talleyrand.

Location: Hôtel Talleyrand, 2 Rue Saint-Florentin, 75001 Paris

Time:  Entry will be between 18:30 to 19:30. Our cocktail with Champagne and aperitif will begin at 19:00 and will end at 22:00. There will be a welcome speech at 19:00.

This international team is finding ways to improve neurosurgical systems around the world.

In 2022-2023, a Bass Connections team is working to address the shortages of labor, funds and infrastructure in neurosurgical settings around the world. Using the World Health Organization’s health system building blocks - from research and technology to service delivery - team members are assessing the big-picture challenges facing these countries’ overloaded neurosurgeons.

As a junior undergraduate, Kaylin Tsukayama - like many college students - wasn’t sure what direction she wanted to take in her career. She was a neuroscience major and had already spent nearly three years studying the subject and working in labs; yet, she was starting to question whether she wanted to continue in a natural science field.

From the start of her first year, she spent time during office hours and lunches having conversations with them about diversity and retention in STEM fields.

In 2013, the first Bass Connections research teams embarked on ambitious projects to tackle real-world challenges ranging from gender inequality in STEM education to children’s mental health to climate policy in the U.S. to rural poverty. Since then, the program has supported nearly 500 interdisciplinary teams and brought together more than 4,000 faculty, students and staff to conduct cutting-edge research spanning dozens of disciplinary fields and world regions.

Duke UK Community Service and the Duke UK Women's Forum are collaborating on an upcoming event in May 2023, the 25th Anniversary MoonWalk to support Walk the Walk, the UK's largest grant making breast cancer charity in the UK. Come take on this amazing, fun challenge with a team of fellow Dukies, walking through the streets of London, raising awareness, investing in prevention, and supporting those living with breast and other cancers.

The 2021-2022 school year marked a series of welcome returns for the 1,200 students, faculty, staff and community partners who participated in Bass Connections. Our 61 year-long project teams resumed their in-person work on campus, many teams participated in their first fieldwork since 2019 and we were once again able gather together in Penn Pavilion to celebrate the year through our annual Fortin Foundation Bass Connections Showcase.

Since 2013, the Education & Human Development theme of Bass Connections (EHD) has engaged students and faculty in interdisciplinary research exploring the range of factors contributing to positive life outcomes from personal and communal health to social and familial connections to income and employment to happiness.

Among the 2022 Ph.D. graduates are numerous students who took advantage of the Bass Connections program to strengthen their dissertation research, coauthor publications and hone career-enhancing skills. Many students also engaged in other interdisciplinary opportunities across campus.

These 10 seniors are among the nearly 600 Duke undergraduates who participate in Bass Connections each year. For some students, taking part in collaborative, interdisciplinary research confirmed and deepened their interests; for others, the experience opened up entirely new paths. Many students found ways to take their research further through honors theses and other opportunities.

DukeEngage independent project participant Naman Parikh ’24 was chosen as the first-ever Chelsea Decaminada Memorial DukeEngage Fellow, which recognizes a passion for international service and doing good in the world. The fellowship was established by the Decaminada family in memory of their daughter, Chelsea ’15, who was part of the 2013 DukeEngage-Kolkata (India) program.

Wesley Pritzlaff’s love of teaching and empowering others–and a desire to experience a completely new culture–inspired him to apply to DukeEngage-Zhuhai in 2019. Little did he know the program would help him discover a new career path. After graduating early, Pritzlaff has been working as a physical therapy aide and will matriculate this fall at Duke’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program as part of the Class of 2024.

Raisa Chowdhury

Like many Duke students, Raisa Chowdhury came into Duke as a premed major— until she did a DukeEngage Independent project in Chilmari, Bangladesh. Since then, she returned to Dhaka, Bangladesh and later Washington, D.C. to work on projects across a range of topics including rights of vulnerable populations, peace-building, and digital development. She’s now a master’s student focused on international development at Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.

Adam Petty has worn just about every DukeEngage hat that exists. He participated in the Uganda-Kaihura program in 2013 and returned as a site coordinator in 2016. He’s presented to the DukeEngage Advisory Board, volunteered at the Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy, and worked as a program coordinator with ACE, a DukeEngage-like program for student-athletes.

Wendy Xiao got a taste for teaching in 2012 when she co-taught cooking classes at Lettuce Link, which ran a giving garden at Marra Farm in Seattle’s South Park neighborhood. Since graduating from Duke in 2014, she’s taught literacy and dance at a school for children with learning differences in Washington, DC.

Although Melissa Benn spent her 2012 DukeEngage summer in Thailand, her post-Duke path has focused on Africa. From working as a project manager for a food security monitoring program in Ethiopia and Sudan to her current role supporting sustainable agricultural and economic diversification in Malawi, Melissa continues to make a difference by empowering the communities she serves. Eneka Lamb participated in DukeEngage-Kenya-WISER in 2011 as a way to experience what she learned in the classroom at work in an actual community. Her passion for global health has taken her around the world, from conducting medical education research at Duke-NUS in Singapore to working at remote hospital in Guyana with the Peace Corps. Eneka is now in Washington, DC, where she is pursing a graduate certificate in advanced biomedical sciences.

DukeEngage welcomes Adria Kinney '13 as the new assistant director for training and development. In this role, she oversees the Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy, the Brodhead Service Program, and DukeEngage's student leadership programs. After graduating from Duke, Adria taught English in Beijing and Madrid, earned a masters degree in international education, and worked as a College Adviser at Duke and a College Liaison at Durham Tech.
