In 2013, the first Bass Connections research teams embarked on ambitious projects to tackle real-world challenges ranging from gender inequality in STEM education to children’s mental health to climate policy in the U.S. to rural poverty. Deondra Rose, associate professor of public policy, political science and history in the Sanford School of Public Policy and director of Polis: the Center for Politics, has been named by Duke University as a Bass Chair in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching and research.

Rose will be the Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor, effective July 1 for a five-year term. She will become a lifetime member of the Bass Society of Fellows.

DukeEngage welcomes Adria Kinney '13 as the new assistant director for training and development. In this role, she oversees the Fortin Foundation DukeEngage Academy, the Brodhead Service Program, and DukeEngage's student leadership programs. After graduating from Duke, Adria taught English in Beijing and Madrid, earned a masters degree in international education, and worked as a College Adviser at Duke and a College Liaison at Durham Tech. 

Duke staff and volunteers, including Duke Forest Director and NSOE alum, Sara Childs MEM'08, and MEM student, Kelly Horvath MEM'19, planted 2,000 Longleaf Pine seedlings in the Duke Forest.
