On February 17, just under 200 First-Generation/Low-Income students, alumni, faculty, and staff came together for our 2nd Annual Duke First Resilience Dinner. It was an evening of good food, shared experiences, amazing connections, and exciting raffle prizes.

This international team is finding ways to improve neurosurgical systems around the world.

In 2022-2023, a Bass Connections team is working to address the shortages of labor, funds and infrastructure in neurosurgical settings around the world. Using the World Health Organization’s health system building blocks - from research and technology to service delivery - team members are assessing the big-picture challenges facing these countries’ overloaded neurosurgeons.

Engineering professors, Sophia Santillan and Rebecca Simmons, have been crucial role models for Sydney Hunt as a Black and Hispanic woman in STEM. From the start of her first year, she spent time during office hours and lunches having conversations with them about diversity and retention in STEM fields.

In 2013, the first Bass Connections research teams embarked on ambitious projects to tackle real-world challenges ranging from gender inequality in STEM education to children’s mental health to climate policy in the U.S. to rural poverty. Since then, the program has supported nearly 500 interdisciplinary teams and brought together more than 4,000 faculty, students and staff to conduct cutting-edge research spanning dozens of disciplinary fields and world regions.

When Jasmine Daniel became a Blue Devil, she immediately began to notice the complex relationship between Duke and Durham. She was already interested in research, community engagement and education, having participated in the Knowledge in the Service of Society (KISS) FOCUS cluster as a first year, so when she heard about a Bass Connections team

The 2021-2022 school year marked a series of welcome returns for the 1,200 students, faculty, staff and community partners who participated in Bass Connections. Our 61 year-long project teams resumed their in-person work on campus, many teams participated in their first fieldwork since 2019 and we were once again able gather together in Penn Pavilion to celebrate the year through our annual Fortin Foundation Bass Connections Showcase.

Deondra Rose, associate professor of public policy, political science and history in the Sanford School of Public Policy and director of Polis: the Center for Politics, has been named by Duke University as a Bass Chair in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching and research.

Rose will be the Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor, effective July 1 for a five-year term. She will become a lifetime member of the Bass Society of Fellows.

One of the big gaps between first-gen/low-income students and their non-FGLI peers is the access to connections that help them navigate the process for finding jobs and internships. You can help us narrow that gap by becoming a champion for students during their search.

By the time he was a junior, Brian Zorb ’09 knew he wanted to pursue a career in finance that diverged from the investment banking and sales and trading paths many of his peers were taking. An internship experience at a brokerage firm in his hometown sparked his interest in investment decision-making.

DukeEngage independent project participant Naman Parikh ’24 was chosen as the first-ever Chelsea Decaminada Memorial DukeEngage Fellow, which recognizes a passion for international service and doing good in the world. The fellowship was established by the Decaminada family in memory of their daughter, Chelsea ’15, who was part of the 2013 DukeEngage-Kolkata (India) program.

  • DFE faculty offered 12 finance courses in the Economics Department this spring semester. Across the 12 courses, enrollment totaled 269.

This summer, senior Rachel Helman’s workdays started at 5 a.m. on her family’s farm in Oregon. One could assume her work involved tending to animals, plants, or machinery. In truth, until 2 p.m. she sat comfortably in her bedroom-turned-workspace, interacting with colleagues across the country, programming in Python, and doing research on her Bloomberg Terminal. DFE has named seniors Karam Katariya and Julia Weidman as the 2019-2020 recipients of the DFE Leadership Award. Each spring, the DFE honors one to three seniors with the award for their initiative in finance-related activities at Duke, dedication to peer mentoring, and contributions to the center. Both Katariya and Weidman will graduate this May with B.S. degrees in economics with a concentration in finance.

Guinness World Records has now confirmed that a team of Duke University undergraduates have designed and built the most fuel-efficient vehicle prototype in history: a hydrogen fuel cell car that gets the equivalent of 14,573 miles per gallon. Duke Electric Vehicles (DEV’s) record-breaking run took place on Saturday, July 21 at Galot Motorsports in Benson, North Carolina.
