After experiencing overwhelm as a young patent litigator in Boston, Kelly figured out a time management system to help her show up in the ways that she wanted to at work and at home—without requiring her brain to somehow magically remember it all.

One of the big gaps between first-gen/low-income students and their non-FGLI peers is the access to connections that help them navigate the process for finding jobs and internships. You can help us narrow that gap by becoming a champion for students during their search.

Like many Duke students, Raisa Chowdhury came into Duke as a premed major— until she did a DukeEngage Independent project in Chilmari, Bangladesh. Since then, she returned to Dhaka, Bangladesh and later Washington, D.C. to work on projects across a range of topics including rights of vulnerable populations, peace-building, and digital development. She’s now a master’s student focused on international development at Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.

This summer, senior Rachel Helman’s workdays started at 5 a.m. on her family’s farm in Oregon. One could assume her work involved tending to animals, plants, or machinery. In truth, until 2 p.m. she sat comfortably in her bedroom-turned-workspace, interacting with colleagues across the country, programming in Python, and doing research on her Bloomberg Terminal. DFE has named seniors Karam Katariya and Julia Weidman as the 2019-2020 recipients of the DFE Leadership Award. Each spring, the DFE honors one to three seniors with the award for their initiative in finance-related activities at Duke, dedication to peer mentoring, and contributions to the center. Both Katariya and Weidman will graduate this May with B.S. degrees in economics with a concentration in finance.

From working as a project manager for a food security monitoring program in Ethiopia and Sudan to her current role supporting sustainable agricultural and economic diversification in Malawi, Melissa continues to make a difference by empowering the communities she serves. Participants will be given the opportunity to enhance standards around reproducibility and documentation of biomedical high-throughput sequencing by innovating and standardizing BCO creation and conformance.
