Sanford School of Public Policy Dean Judith Kelley reappointed to a second five-year term

Kelley has served as dean of the Sanford School since 2018, a period during which the school also celebrated 50 years of public policy studies at Duke. As dean, Kelley has led the development of a new set of strategic priorities to position the school for the future. Under her leadership the school has also developed new academic programs, expanded alumni engagement, and significantly increased fundraising for endowed chairs and graduate student financial aid.

Don't focus on shame and guilt in Indigenous people's healing

Writer:

I was born and raised away from the reservation, like the vast majority of Native youth of my generation. However, my grandfather grew up on the family allotment near Ada, Oklahoma. Papaw was the biggest cultural defender in my family. He was a Chickasaw artist who could draw, paint, sculpt, and carve with equal beauty. When I was a toddler, Papaw carved me a bow and set of arrows so I could accompany him during archery practice in the garage. He told me that we must always use a bow to hunt because it wasn’t fair to the animals to hunt with guns.

Cultivating intellectual freedom in the classroom

Writer:

A conservative student announces to the class that his experience during his first semester in Duke’s Visions of Freedom Focus program dispelled prior concerns that he would be ostracized by his fellow students and penalized by his professors on account of his political beliefs. Instead of condemnation, he encountered spirited debate within an intellectually diverse community of friends.

Congrats to class of 2021!

From all of us in the neuroscience major: congratulations to our recent 2021 graduates! We want to express our sincere appreciation for having been able to work with all of you over the years. Best of luck!
