Ask a Blue Devil: Frequently asked questions

Who should use Ask a Blue Devil?

Alumni and students who seek mentoring, advice, and guidance and want to cast a wide net for responses. Busy alumni and students will also find it helpful because you can write one message and get connected to several of the best-fitting alumni without searching for specific people.

How does it work?

Get started by posting a question or request for advice on the Ask A Blue Devil website. Your request will be matched to alumni who can help, and you'll receive responses in your email inbox within about a week. Look for email from AskABlueDevil@duke.edu.

What happens after I get a response?

Always make sure to take the time to say thank you to alums who respond to your request. We also recommend that you take a few minutes to look up the alum on LinkedIn and in the Duke Alumni Network and learn more about them. Many alumni are willing to continue the conversation and share even more with you after your initial exchange.

Alumni Network: Frequently asked questions

How will I know if someone is active in the Alumni Network?

Check the 'last login' at the top of any alumni’s profile to see when their contact info was last updated.

How can I specify what I’m searching for?

The search functions include the following filters: deceased, contact me about, industry, current employer, current job title, class year, regional & affinity groups, degree, majors/minors/programs, school, city, state, or country.

Pro-tip: Add terms within a filter to expand your reach (e.g. NorCal OR Puget Sound); add terms in multiple filters to narrow it (e.g. NorCal AND MBA).

Can students search in the Alumni Network?

Yes, once logged in, current Duke students can search to find and message alumni who can help expand their knowledge, explore career options, introduce them to contacts, and even help identify job and internship opportunities. Alumni may also update their privacy settings from their profile, if they choose to be excluded from search results.
