- Michael H. Merson, founding director of the Duke Global Health Institute and vice chancellor for Duke-National University of Singapore Affairs, will take on the role of interim vice president and vice provost for global strategy and programs. He succeeds on an interim basis L. Gregory Jones M. Div. ’85, Ph.D. ’88, who is stepping down from the position for health reasons after creating the Office of Global Strategy and Programs in 2010.
- Michael B. Kastan has been named executive director of the Duke Cancer Institute. A cancer scientist whose research focuses on molecular and cellular events that cause cancer and its progression, he has been director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
- Juliet Bottorff '13 won the 10,000 meter competition at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She is the first outdoor women’s champion in the history of Duke track and field and its first champion since Shannon Rowbury ’06, A.M. ’08 won the indoor mile in 2006.
- Cathy N. Davidson, the Ruth F. De-Varney Professor of English and John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Professor of interdisciplinary studies at Duke, has been appointed to the National Council on the Humanities for a six-year term.
- Marie Lynn Miranda '85, director of the Children’s Environmental Health Initiative, an interdisciplinary program housed at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, has been named dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment. Her appointment begins in January 2012.
- Timothy Pyatt '81, former university archivist and associate director of special collections, has been named the Dorothy Foehr Huck Chair and head of the Eberly Family Special Collections Library at Pennsylvania State University.
