On February 17, just under 200 First-Generation/Low-Income students, alumni, faculty, and staff came together for our 2nd Annual Duke First Resilience Dinner. It was an evening of good food, shared experiences, amazing connections, and exciting raffle prizes.

In our masks and at our ad hoc work stations, we have come through a semester unlike any other. We are proud of the Duke community effort to keep everyone safe while students continued to learn. This summer, senior Rachel Helman’s workdays started at 5 a.m. on her family’s farm in Oregon. One could assume her work involved tending to animals, plants, or machinery. In truth, until 2 p.m. she sat comfortably in her bedroom-turned-workspace, interacting with colleagues across the country, programming in Python, and doing research on her Bloomberg Terminal. DFE has named seniors Karam Katariya and Julia Weidman as the 2019-2020 recipients of the DFE Leadership Award. Each spring, the DFE honors one to three seniors with the award for their initiative in finance-related activities at Duke, dedication to peer mentoring, and contributions to the center. Both Katariya and Weidman will graduate this May with B.S. degrees in economics with a concentration in finance.

Student in the driver's seat in the Duke Electric Vehicles team's record-breaking car

Guinness World Records has now confirmed that a team of Duke University undergraduates have designed and built the most fuel-efficient vehicle prototype in history: a hydrogen fuel cell car that gets the equivalent of 14,573 miles per gallon. Duke Electric Vehicles (DEV’s) record-breaking run took place on Saturday, July 21 at Galot Motorsports in Benson, North Carolina.
