Are you interest in supporting Duke but have limited time available. Apply to become an interviewer and support the Admissions Office by meeting with undergraduate applicants for an informational conversation. Applicants are given the opportunity to speak with an alum to tell us more about what drives them and why they think Duke is the place for them. This really helps the admissions officers make informed decisions in those cases where the admit/deny decision is not clear cut.

In 2013, the first Bass Connections research teams embarked on ambitious projects to tackle real-world challenges ranging from gender inequality in STEM education to children’s mental health to climate policy in the U.S. to rural poverty. Since then, the program has supported nearly 500 interdisciplinary teams and brought together more than 4,000 faculty, students and staff to conduct cutting-edge research spanning dozens of disciplinary fields and world regions.

When Jasmine Daniel became a Blue Devil, she immediately began to notice the complex relationship between Duke and Durham. She was already interested in research, community engagement and education, having participated in the Knowledge in the Service of Society (KISS) FOCUS cluster as a first year, so when she heard about a Bass Connections team

A 2022-2023 Bass Connections team is digging into the richness of dirt and fungi to inform the development of a unique art project called “Soil and Spirit.”

While stepping into a new era with the Duke Climate Commitment, Duke also looks back on a long state history of environmental justice advocacy and the injustices that necessitate it.

The 2021-2022 school year marked a series of welcome returns for the 1,200 students, faculty, staff and community partners who participated in Bass Connections. Our 61 year-long project teams resumed their in-person work on campus, many teams participated in their first fieldwork since 2019 and we were once again able gather together in Penn Pavilion to celebrate the year through our annual Fortin Foundation Bass Connections Showcase.

Fall Medical Alumni Weekend | November 3-6

After conducting research in cognitive neuroscience as a first-year student, Kelsey Graywill (Program II '18) began searching for interdisciplinary projects that would enable her to conduct research at the intersection of multiple disciplines and prepare for medical school.

Aislinn McLaughlin (Master of Environmental Management) is the winner of the 2022 Bass Connections Award for Outstanding Mentorship. This annual award recognizes the crucial leadership and mentorship roles that graduate students and postdocs play on Bass Connections teams.

For these five alumni, Bass Connections was a vital part of their journey to careers in health and medicine.

These three students joined Bass Connections teams that took on challenges facing our planet, from climate change to plastic pollution to habitat loss.

Launched in 2018 with support from a Bass Connections Student Research Award, the Help Desk program trains Duke student volunteers to connect patients with social services in the Durham area.

Every year Duke Alumni Engagement and Development presents awards to alumni who embody the spirit of Forever Duke and advance the Duke ideal of “knowledge in the service of society.” Congratulations to our Sanford 2022 Winners!

Many people credit college with saving them, but Duke actually saved Chasity Boyce's life when she was a baby.  She was born in High Point, but was airlifted to Duke, where doctors were able to diagnois and treat her. Deondra Rose, associate professor of public policy, political science and history in the Sanford School of Public Policy and director of Polis: the Center for Politics, has been named by Duke University as a Bass Chair in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching and research.

Rose will be the Kevin D. Gorter Associate Professor, effective July 1 for a five-year term. She will become a lifetime member of the Bass Society of Fellows.

Wesley Pritzlaff’s love of teaching and empowering others–and a desire to experience a completely new culture–inspired him to apply to DukeEngage-Zhuhai in 2019. Little did he know the program would help him discover a new career path. We still live in times where the struggle for human rights continues. All individuals deserve to be protected against discrimination, human rights violations and basic indecency. All people regardless of background should be respected and their rights protected.

Like many Duke students, Raisa Chowdhury came into Duke as a premed major— until she did a DukeEngage Independent project in Chilmari, Bangladesh. Since then, she returned to Dhaka, Bangladesh and later Washington, D.C. to work on projects across a range of topics including rights of vulnerable populations, peace-building, and digital development. She’s now a master’s student focused on international development at Princeton’s School of Public and International Affairs.

The Sanford MPP Mentoring Program matches current MPP students with MPP alumni who offer support and guidance based on their own educational and professional experiences. Mentors meet with their mentees (often virtually) at least once per month from the middle of their first year through the middle of their second year. Registration will become available in January.

We are excited to mark the anniversary of your graduation from Duke Law School. Every five years, alumni celebrate their reunion with classmates, professors, and friends. While we look forward to the time when we can all gather together again on Duke's campus, we are prioritizing the health and safety of the Duke Law community and planning a virtual celebration for Duke Law Reunion 2021 on March 2-4.

The Women Law Student Association is seeking volunteers to serve as mentors to current Duke Law students!  As a mentor, you will advise your mentee on navigating the job search, provide insight into your area of the law, and share about your experience as an attorney.

When I entered Duke in 1981, I was the first person in my family to go to college. My father had graduated from high school, but my mother dropped out of the 10th grade. In our house, we never talked about a college degree or what it could mean, but through the encouragement of some great teachers and the guiding hand of a few close neighbors, I made it to Duke.

Jessica Abroms '98: From Pixar to Disney to Indie App Production: Jessica Abroms is the founder of a mobile app and UX consulting company Teatime Media,  and creator of the M.A.S.H. games. She visited Duke CS in January 2019, and spoke to Duke CS undergrad students. They learned and were inspired by how Jessica's undergrad experiences in computer science influenced her career path.
